Harry's Place.
We in Lewisham haven't got any fascist councillors; but they stand candidates at both local and general elections. In the last general election the BNP candidate got a thousand votes in Lewisham East, which compares to five thousand for the, third placed, Liberal Democrat candidate. At the local election their candidates in Downham beat the Conservatives into third place and were only a couple of hundred votes off the Labour candidates.
My own experience of facists has been distintly unpleasant; I remember canvassing on my own a couple of years ago and one attempting to beat me up. (I wish I could say that I took the fight to this individual but I didn't, I was intimidated and wanted to be away from there as fast as possible. Imagine what people living around this person felt like! I did involve the police and our housing officers, but to little effect.) I later watched a local politics tv programme and saw the same man delivering leaflets for the BNP so can be reasonably sure he was an active member.
So, I'm happy to support
the campaign.
